ABOUT ME

My name is Marie Lax and I am 31 years old. I have 3 boys aged 1,6 and 8 and a happy and devoted husband who I have been married to for 8 years. My husband is an Estate Manager. We also have our own smallholding on which we keep free range chickens, pigs, cows, horses and sheep. And locally we sell free range eggs. In my spare time i sell Cards and Giftwrap from a company called Phoenix Trading. I have always lived on the Island and absolutely love it here.

Along with my 3 boys comes plenty of first hand knowledge of pregnancy, childbirth and babies. My pregnancies were all different with varying levels of enjoyable, difficult and tiring experiences, and both were similarly positive experiences. I gave birth at St Marys Hospital and the staff there were great, although I have always liked the idea of a home birth.

I have always known that nurturing expectant families through pregnancy and labour would be my ideal job. My only career option seemed to be a midwife, I did plenty of research and soon realised it just wasn’t quite what I was looking for. When I heard about the role of doula I knew that it was my dream job.

I have attended an intensive City and Guilds doula training course with British Doulas and plan to increase my knowledge with other workshops and courses, because I don’t think a doula can ever stop learning. Before I trained to become a doula I actually spent a year working in St Marys Maternity Department as an Auxiliary. As a doula I have yet to experience a home birth, but I do have firsthand experience of hospital births and caesareans, from my time spent at St Marys. I am also a member of the Association of Breast feeding Mothers and I am currently training as a breast feeding mothers support.
