WHAT IS
MY ROLE AS A DOULA?
As a
doula I am offering myself as an experienced woman and mother able to offer
both practical and emotional support to a woman before, during and after
childbirth. This support will help her and the rest of the family to relax and
enjoy this most awe-inspiring experience. A doulas role is to mother the
mother, so enabling her to have the most positive pregnancy and birth
experience possible. Every woman is unique and so my role as a doula is
flexible to meet with each individuals needs. I offer services as both a birth
doula and a postnatal doula.
A birth
doula will have good knowledge of female and birth physiology. The doulas most
important role is to provide continuous support and reassurance, and may offer advice
on comfort and relaxation for the labouring woman. A doula is not a midwife or
a medically trained member of staff and does not provide support in a clinical
role. They do not diagnose medical conditions or give advice in that role or
make decisions for you. The doula will stay with you during the entire labour
however, and will assist in communication between you and other support persons
and clinical staff, as well as providing you with continuous physical and
emotional support and comfort
A postnatal
doula will provide emotional and practical support to the new mother and family
in their home following the birth of their baby. My role as a postnatal doula
is to empower a family to take care of themselves and make this easier by
helping out around the house and offering encouragement and reassurance.
